Initiatives

Google aims to strengthen cooperation with various stakeholders, including governments, and promote initiatives to ensure that everyone can use the Internet safely and securely. We will also work to provide research support and training programs in collaboration with academic institutions in Japan and other Asia-Pacific countries, with the aim of contributing to the improvement of cybersecurity standards and sustainable growth throughout the Asia-Pacific region.

Google announced participation in "U.S.-Kyushu Cybersecurity Partnership"

On June 17, 2024, Google announced its participation in the U.S.-Kyushu Cyber Security Partnership initiative. Together with U.S. and Japanese industry, government, and academic partner organizations and associations, Google is committed to strengthening cybersecurity in the Kyushu region to contribute to the economic and national security of Japan and the United States.

Google attended the IISS Shangri-La Dialogue.

Google attended the IISS Shangri-La Dialogue 2024 held in Singapore from May 31 to June 2, 2024, and participated in discussions on cybersecurity. The IISS Shangri-La Dialogue is held annually as a forum for defense ministers from Asia, Europe, and the United States to discuss security issues. 40 defense ministers, including those from the United States and China, attended the conference this year. Google also organized a roundtable session attended by more than 20 policy makers to discuss ways to improve cybersecurity.

Chief Privacy, Safety, and Security Officer Shane Huntley discussed Google's "safe by default" approach and cybersecurity workforce development efforts, built on the world's most advanced security infrastructure.

Shane Huntley, Chief Privacy, Safety and Security Officer, and Junichiro Uchiyama, Director of the Cybersecurity Center of Excellence, introduced Google's initiatives and its focus areas in the changing cyber security environment.

Google opened the space for Cybersecurity Center of Excellence

On March 7, 2024, Google opened a space for its Cybersecurity Center of Excellence in our Roppongi office in Tokyo. The opening ceremony was attended by Digital Minister Taro Kono and other numerous industry, academia, and government officials from Japan and abroad.

Nikkei Digital Forum "Responsibility for a Safe and Secure Digital Space Shared by Society as a Whole" held in March 2024.

Junichiro Uchiyama, Head of Cybersecurity Center of Excellence, spoke to discuss the latest threat trends and introduced Google's efforts to realize a secure digital society and the technologies that enable organizations to conduct secure business activities.

Messages from staff of Google Cybersecurity Center of Excellence

At Google, various cybersecurity experts are working to strengthen cybersecurity in Japan and the Asia-Pacific region.

  • When looking back on the history of cybersecurity, threat actors have evolved their strategy, operations and tactics by exploiting vulnerabilities arising from the development of digital society.
    This reflects the reality that threat actors have adapted to security controls by learning from defenders while controlling the impact of sanctions.
    During this time, the defense side has always borne a high cost, but the cost increase imposed on threat actors has been limited. To correct this imbalance, it is extremely important that individual actions expand into a collective and collaborate.

    We need to create an environment that transforms the power of the "individual" into the power of the "group" and strive for its sustainable development.
    The Google Cybersecurity Center of Excellence focused on research, education, and policy development.
    Its goal is to support the building of robust cyber defense systems at the individual, organizational, and national levels, and to enhance the collective strength derived from this solidarity.
